Descartes philosophy was built on radical doubt. The image above shows an example of your eyes perceiving you. Your eyes may see a cloud but it could be any other possible object making your eyes the opposite of an irrefutable truth. The irrefutable truth in the picture is the mind thinking. You can always doubt that what you see is not a cloud but you cannot doubt that you are thinking. The reason we picture a certain object is the influence of authority. But Descartes was against authority in his philosophy and understood that anything can be doubted but the process of thinking is an irrefutable truth.
